The Journey: Day Four

04/12/2015 2:17pm

Today's journey is about where I am going to travel in this blog.  I thought I'd been working at this blog for three years but it turns out I've been working on this project for five years!  I can't believe it.  I'm happy that I've stuck with this project but it bums me out that I haven't yet found my niche yet.  It's a struggle.

Stay at home mom

I am in a situation where I have to stay home with my daughter.  Working outside of my home is not an option.  When I Google "ways to make money online", blogging is always on the list.  How do you make money blogging?  That's the million dollar question. . .

The money-maker is advertising

Mainly from what I can determine the money maker for a blog is advertising. Since the beginning I have had Google ad-sense on my blog pages but in five years I've only made $20.  Why so low?  Well, it has to do with traffic -that's how many people come to my website.  I believe in order to make money, your traffic stats have to be really high.  Translation: lots of people need to come to your blog. The more readers you have coming to your blog, the higher the chance they will click on an ad, and the more chance Google will pay you for that click.

Affiliate Marketing and earning commision

This ad thing is called Affiliate marketing "the process of earning a commission by promoting other people's (or company's) products." (Google)  You can do this by having a company's advertisements on your webpage or by writing a blog entry that promotes the product in a way that compels people to buy the product.

Improving your chances

Part of this journey is to figure out what I can do to improve my chances to have success with this affiliate marketing program.  I have both Google Ad sense and Amazon ads on my website. I need to learn more about these programs because obviously I'm not doing something right.  There are a lot of other affiliate marketing programs out there.  In the coming months, I will explore them but for now, I'm just working with Google and Amazon.

Do you use either of these programs on your website or blog?  What are the things that you do to be successful with these programs?  Are there other affiliate marketing tools that you use?

Looking forward to your comments.  Until next time. . .
